Suan Bua Royal Residence Museum

We would like to invite you to be our guest at Suan Bua Royal Residence which is now The Grand Museum. Suan Bua Residential Hall was constructed in the reign of King Rama V as the royal residence of H.R.H. Princess Saisavali Bhirom, Consort, and her two daughters, Princess Malini Nobhadara and Princess Nibha Nobhadol.

As H.R.H.Princess Saisavali was skillful in the culinary arts, King Chulalongkorn appointed her to be in charge of the royal kitchen. For this reason, Suan Bua Royal Residence was once the place where the King's meals were prepared. This residence was also used as the musical training hall of the royal court .

The name of "suan" or "garden" was used to identify almost every building in the Dusit Palace by King Chulalongkorn to refer to the whole grounds to conform to the theme of gardens. All of the halls, buildings and residences were built among lush trees and rising ground, and crisscrossed by canals. The word "Bua" in Thai means "Lotus" or "Water Lily".
